Iowa SBIR Showcase Success

This month, Iowa Innovation Corporation held the McKee, Voorhees & Sease Iowa SBIR Showcase in Iowa City. One hundred participants attended, and 115 meetings with Federal Agency Program managers from NIH, NSF, DOD, USDA, DOE, and Dept. of Education were held.

Highlights from the day include:

  • Eight companies competed in the Phase I Pitch Competition. Ian Tevis of Safi-Techwon the $5,000 prize.
  • Seven companies competed in the Phase II Pitch Competition. Michael Schultzand Frances Johnson of Viewpoint Molecular Targeting won the $10,000 prize.
  • Participants attended informative workshops on raising private capital, protecting their IP, and Phase I and Phase II SBIR proposal preparation.

In addition, three companies were awarded $25,000 in matching financial assistance from IICorp and the IEDA to match recently won Phase I SBIR awards:

  • Gross-Wen Technologies, which invented algae-based wastewater treatment as a sustainable alternative to recovering nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater.
  • StarrMatica Learning Systems, Inc.,an award-winning education publishing company that specializes in digital content solutions.
  • SnyderBio, which created a platform technology to isolate and enrich cancer cells from biological specimens for research and diagnostic purposes.
